Warm Bodies: Movie Review

This movie is SO CUTE!!!

It’s basically Romeo & Juliet with zombies.

No. Seriously. It’s Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet as set in The Upcoming Zombie Apocalypse. The zombies are kinda the Montagues and humans are sort of the Capulets. The couple is even named “R” and “Julie!”

Or, put another way…

A funny new twist on a classic love story, WARM BODIES is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human – setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world. (Summit Entertainment)

OK, here’s the deal… R (Romeo) is one of the living dead. He has a wonderful inner monologue going about what a drag it is to be a zombie. R encounters Julie (Juliet) and the two fall in love. As they do so, love begins to turn R human. And it’s contagious. His best friend, M (Mercutio), catches it as do the others.

Mayhem ensues when… Julie’s dad (John Malkovich), top army commander guy who is hellbent on saving what is left of humanity from the living dead, doesn’t get the warm and fuzzies about his sweetie pie falling for a walking corpse. He refuses to acknowledge that the zombies are curing themselves. He continues to pursue and kill* them relentlessly. But Love has the power to transform!

Watch the Trailer!

My two cents… This is the latest in a series of ZomCom (Zombie Comedy) films, one of my favourite genres. It does not disappoint. The romantic angle is important, as you would expect from a movie based on Romeo & Juliet. But unlike other ZomCom movies like Shaun of the Dead where a relationship between Shaun and his girlfriend is an element of the movie or Zombieland where a flirtation and possible relationship in the making sometime in the future is a cute scene or two, Romantic Love is front and centre in Warm Bodies. And it works! Nicholas Hoult as R has mastered and perfected the soulful stunned ‘deer caught in the headlights of love’ look.  He is irresistible. Teresa Palmer is adorable as can be as the confused and conflicted Julie. John Malkovich is a total Über-Dad as Julie’s military boss father. But my favourite is Analeigh Tipton as Julie’s friend Nora who probably has one of the cutest lines in the movie. “I wish the internet was still working so I could just look up whatever it is that’s wrong with you!”

RottenTomatoes.com gives Warm Bodies a 76% freshness rating. Usually, for me, this is the ‘kiss of death’ movie rating but in this particular case, it’s bang on!

“Though R’s mind is nimble in (very witty) voice-over, out loud he can only express himself in a series of groans and grumbles–as touching a metaphor for love-struck adolescence as we may see at the movies this year.” (Christopher Orr – The Atlantic)

To call this an unlikely love story is an understatement, but it is precisely this level of weirdness that makes the romance between R and Julia so surprisingly touching. (Tim Martain – The Mercury)

Bottom line… WATCH IT! No, really. You HAVE to watch it.

* We seriously need to come up with an appropriate word or expression for ‘killing’ a zombie. The problem is, of course, that they’re reanimated corpses. How do you kill something that’s already dead? I’m working on it but so far, all other words and phrases just aren’t working out for me. I’ll keep you posted.

Hello Kitty Bed

Those who confess to knowing me well are aware of my penchant for almost all things Hello Kitty.

Some (Anna… Chris…) go so far as to suggest I need an intervention!

A friend passed this along to me the other day and I simply HAD to post it here!

How could you NOT want to sleep in this bed???

TRUE BLOOD: Season Six

Last night was the premiere of TRUE BLOOD (Season Six)!

Best lines of the episode…

Arlene: Well, I got news for you, Andy. Life ain’t fair. And there ain’t no Santa Claus, neither. And when you stick Mr Happy in someone’s hoo-ha without a raincoat on, babies come out! Now get your butt inside and face your responsibilities!

Andy: Well, hog tits, Arlene!

TRUE BLOOD will hold me until Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire and Dexter return!

Maila Nurmi – Vampira!

I was going through the most excellent articles over at The Eye of Faith {Vintage} blog when I came across the image of a lovely young lady…

(A very young Maila Nurmi)

I doubt many of you would recognize this girl as she looked in her younger years.

You’re probably more familiar seeing her like this…

vampira-01(Maila Nurmi as Vampira)

Yes, Maila Nurmi played the legendary character Vampira.

vampira-02(Check out that waistline!!)

Dark, lovely, creepy…  her character Vampira quickly became a cult classic.

Vampira is a kind of entity (and you can call her a woman though she is androgynous) that survives in this world. I, Maila Nurmi, am not.”  –  Maila Nurmi

LWC & I Invade Comic-Con (Part 2)!

As I confessed in my previous blog article, until this past Sunday I have never attended any Comic-Con event ever.

All that changed when my trusty superhero sidekick LWC and I entered Comic-Con Niagara Falls 2013!

LWC had the good sense to bring her own backup forces! [1]

CCNF-22-cu(LWC happy to be at Comic-Con!)

Her gang, all of whom are comic-book superhero fans, loved the vendors and the merchandize!

CCNF-03-sm(One of my personal favourites!)

There were cars…

CCNF-12-sm(The TV Batmobile!)

And stars…

CCNF-09-cu(A blurry Adam West – He’s a lot faster than you’d think!)

And more stars…

CCNF-11-cu(No Close-Up for You!)

But my personal all-time favourite thing at Comic-Con was the Cosplay!

CCNF-04-sm(Well there’s something you don’t see every day!)

Some were intricate and well executed…

CCNF-18-sm(Spent time talking with this girl and the costume’s creator!)

Some were superhero sexy…

CCNF-23-sm(Colour me patriotic!)

Some were destabilizingly hot…

CCNF-14-sm(O… M… G!)

Some were Steampunk!

CCNF-08-sm(Where’s Jules Verne when you really need him?)

And some were…

CCNF-07-sm(Naughty girl!)

Harley Quinn…

CCNF-02-sm(Harley and friends!)

Harley Quinn…

CCNF-10-sm(Modern Harley!)

Harley Quinn…

CCNF-19-sm(Casual Harley!)

Harley Quinn…

CCNF-05-sm(“Hi, it’s me. Enough with the Harley Quinn photos, already!”)

These girls were a riot…

CCNF-16-sm(Yea, team!)

Even saw a Cosplay Agent Romanoff (Black Widow) kick some serious butt!

CCNF-13-sm(3 seconds later, this guy was on the floor!)

However, the Comic-Con Niagara Falls 2013 award for Best Costume Ever goes to…

CCNF-15-sm(Hmmm… I think there may have been a bit of election vote-rigging here!)

Well… let’s just say that there have been calls for a recount.

All in all, a good time was had by everyone.

Next stop…
